Call for Applications | The Eleventh Quantitative History Summer School

Since its inception in 2013 by Professors Zhiwu Chen, Debin Ma, and Denggao Long, the Quantitative History Summer School has served as a collaborative platform for young scholars to delve into quantitative methodologies in historical research. Throughout ten successful cohorts, both local and international participants have reaped significant benefits, receiving praise from fellow academics.

We are delighted to announce the Call for Applications for the Eleventh Quantitative History Summer School. Scheduled from July 5-15, 2025, this year’s summer school will take place in Qingdao and Yantai, Shandong, China. The event will unfold at Shandong University’s Qingdao campus from July 5-11 and at the Longfor Leadership Centre in Yantai from July 11-14. This Quantitative History Summer School is jointly organised by the Centre of Quantitative History at the HKU Business School, the School of History at Shandong University, the School of Archaeology at Shandong University, the School of Economics at Shandong University, and the Institute of Qing History at the Renmin University of China, in collaboration with the International Society for Quantitative History and the HK Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Eleventh Quantitative History Summer School continues the tradition of inviting distinguished scholars from around the world to lead sessions, including luminaries such as Bai Ying (Chinese University of Hong Kong), Shuji Cao (University of Hong Kong), Zhiwu Chen (University of Hong Kong), Jianye Han (Renmin University of China), Sijie Hu (Renmin University of China), Zhan Lin (Renmin University of China), Denggao Long (Tsinghua University), ChichengMa (University of Hong Kong), Kaixiang Peng (Wuhan University), Yuhua Wang (Harvard University), and Yuda Yang (Fudan University). While most courses will be conducted in Chinese, non-Chinese-speaking professors will lecture in English (without translation).

Designed for passionate individuals with interests in historical and economic research, alongside backgrounds in sociology, archaeology, political science, law, and other related disciplines, the Summer School welcomes young teachers, scholars, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, and outstanding master’s and undergraduate students. Participants are expected to possess advanced English language skills, a foundation in econometrics and statistics, a deep academic curiosity, research capabilities, and a dedication to foundational theoretical and historical research.

This year’s Summer School aims to recruit 120 exceptional young talents nationwide. Attendance at the Summer School is free of charge for admitted students, courtesy of our sponsoring organizations; however, participants are responsible for their transportation expenses.
